Ariocarpus fissuratus, the Living Rock cactus, is one of the most sought-after cacti in cultivation. It grows almost flat to the ground as a rosette of rough, grey-green, fissured tubercles that look like broken stone, then surprises you with large magenta-pink flowers from the woolly crown in fall. Native to the limestone hills of the Big Bend region of Texas and northern Mexico.
It is very slow-growing — a plant may take 8–12 years to flower from seed — which is exactly why collectors grow it from seed rather than hunting for mature plants. Seed-grown plants on their own roots keep the flat, compact habit the species is known for.
Germination is moderate. Surface-sow on a fine mineral mix, keep warm (75–85°F) with high humidity for the first two weeks, and expect germination in 10–30 days. Seedlings are tiny; keep them in the humid tray for several months before gradually hardening off.
What you'll receive: Fresh seed hand-harvested from our own flowering parent plants (pictured), with germination instructions included. Photos show mature parent plants for reference.
We're a small family nursery in Blythe, California, growing in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Every plant and seed we sell is grown 100% on site — no imports, no resellers, no wild collection — pesticide-free, hand-pollinated, and heat-hardened by real desert sun.
