Astrophytum caput-medusae — one of the strangest cacti ever described, and one of the most sought-after Astrophytums in cultivation.
Only discovered in 2001 and first named Digitostigma caput-medusae, this species is native to a single area of Nuevo León, Mexico, where it hides among shrubs and grasses in Tamaulipan thornscrub. Instead of ribs, it grows a crown of long, thin, finger-like tubercles — up to 7 inches long — rising from a short stem over a thick taproot. The tubercles carry the white speckling Astrophytum is known for, and the whole plant looks like a tangle of snakes, hence the name.
Bright yellow flowers with an orange-red throat open from the tubercle tips, often on surprisingly young plants. Fast-growing for an Astrophytum.
