Number of Seeds

Astrophytum ornatum, the Monk's Hood, is the largest and most heavily spined member of the Astrophytum genus, native to central Mexico. Its tall, ribbed body is decorated with bands of pale woolly flecks arranged in herringbone patterns, and each rib carries clusters of stout golden-yellow spines. Among the easiest and showiest Astrophytums to grow, with yellow flowers appearing on mature plants in summer.

Germination is moderate-easy. Surface-sow on a fine mix, keep warm and humid for the first 2 weeks, expect germination in 7-21 days.

What you'll receive: Fresh seeds hand-harvested from our own pollinated parent plants, with a germination guarantee. Growing instructions and germination guidance included with every order. Photos show mature parent plants and/or seedlings for reference.

We're a small family nursery in Blythe, California, growing in the heart of the Sonoran Desert. Every plant and seed we sell is:

  • Grown 100% on site - no imports, no resellers, no middlemen
  • Pesticide-free and naturally grown
  • Hand-pollinated for the best genetics and seed quality
  • Heat-hardened by real desert sun, not greenhouse coddling

Real Living Roots

When you order a live plant from us, you get a plant with an intact, actively growing root system - cleaned of soil for safe bare-root shipping, but alive and ready to resume nutrient uptake the moment you replant.

This is a meaningful difference from much of the imported cactus market. Those plants are grown overseas - often in large commercial greenhouses - then have their roots trimmed for export and spend weeks or months in transit before being resold to the end buyer. They arrive with reduced root systems that need time to rebuild before the plant can really get going again.

Our plants were grown here, by us, with their roots intact from day one.

Shipping & Guarantee

  • Orders ship within 1 business day, Monday-Friday
  • Live arrival guarantee on all plants
  • Germination guidance included with every seed order

Damage / Issues

If something looks off in the first week, please message us with a clear photo BEFORE you cut, scrape, repot, or otherwise intervene with the plant. Many normal post-shipping conditions (soil-line discoloration, callous tissue, minor stress) look alarming but resolve on their own - and cutting into a healthy plant often creates the problem you're trying to prevent. A photo is required within 48 hours of delivery for any damage claim. We'll always make it right when there's a real issue.

Thank you for supporting our small desert farm!
