Snail Vine Seeds — Cochliasanthus caracalla (syn. Vigna caracalla, Phaseolus
caracalla) — also known as Corkscrew Vine, Snail Flower, and Caracalla Bean.

Hand-harvested from our own thriving vine grown under the Sonoran Desert sun
in Blythe, California. These seeds came from a single mature plant that
climbed over 8 feet in one season on our shade structure, producing hundreds
of lavender-purple blooms with that distinctive snail-shell hooded form.

✦ ABOUT SNAIL VINE ✦

A tropical perennial legume native to South and Central America, snail vine
is prized for its unusual coiled flowers and intense fragrance — often
compared to hyacinth or jasmine. It's a vigorous climber that can cover a
trellis, arbor, fence, or pergola in a single growing season, producing
showers of lavender, cream, and pale-purple blooms from summer through fall.

In zones 9-11 it grows as a hardy perennial. In colder zones it's grown as
a fast-growing annual or overwintered indoors. As a nitrogen-fixing legume,
it also improves the soil it grows in.

Thomas Jefferson famously grew snail vine at Monticello and called it "the
most beautiful bean in the world."

✦ GERMINATION ✦

Soak seeds in warm water for 12-24 hours before planting (nick the hard coat
lightly with sandpaper for faster results). Sow 1/2 inch deep in warm soil
(70-85°F). Germination typically in 7-21 days. Direct sow after last frost,
or start indoors 4-6 weeks earlier.
