Dioscorea elephantipes – Elephant's Foot Caudex Seeds
Dioscorea elephantipes, the elephant's foot, is a yam relative from South Africa that forms a woody, dome-shaped caudex covered in corky plates like a turtle shell. A twining vine grows from the top in fall, grows through winter, and dies back in late spring while the caudex rests through summer. Seedlings form a marble-sized caudex in their first year.
Germination
Easy. Germination in 2–4 weeks, best sown in fall. Keep seedlings growing year-round for their first year or two.
What you'll receive
Fresh seed from our own parent plants, in the pack size you choose, with germination instructions included. Photos show parent plants or seedlings for reference.
Care
Bright light for the vine, water while it's growing (fall–spring), nearly dry in summer, keep above about 40°F.
