Echinocereus coccineus – Claret Cup Hedgehog Cactus Seeds
The scarlet hedgehog or claret cup: a clumping Southwestern native that builds mounds of dozens of stems and covers itself in brilliant orange-red, hummingbird-pollinated flowers in spring. One of the most cold-hardy cacti there is, surviving well below 0°F in habitat, and a top choice for rock gardens outside the desert.
Germination
Easy to moderate. Surface-sow, keep warm (70–80°F) and humid; germination in 2–4 weeks. A few weeks of cold, moist stratification can improve results.
What you'll receive
Fresh seed in the pack size you choose, with germination instructions included. The first image is an illustration of the species.
Care
Full sun, gritty well-drained soil, moderate summer water, dry in winter. Hardy to −10°F or below when dry.
About this seed
This is one of a small number of species we don't yet produce in quantity ourselves, so the seed is sourced from established US growers we trust, then stored cool and dry here on our farm in Blythe, California and sold fresh. Everything else we sell is grown on site in full desert sun.
Ships within 1 business day, Monday–Friday.
