Tephrocactus geometricus — commonly known as the Snowman Cactus for its perfectly
spherical, segmented stems that stack one atop another like geometric beads or a
tiny snowman in cactus form.

Native to high-altitude desert in the Catamarca and La Rioja provinces of north-
western Argentina, this slow-growing opuntioid forms compact mounds of nearly
perfect blue-green to gray-green spheres, each segment grown almost flawlessly
round. In intense sun, the stems shift to a striking reddish-purple to violet hue.
Mature plants are nearly spineless, with only a few short dark spines that
contrast beautifully against the chalky stem surface.

In summer, established plants produce surprisingly large white to pale-pink
flowers at the apex of the topmost segments — a striking reward for a species
that demands patience to grow.

The Snowman Cactus is regarded as the holy grail of the Tephrocactus genus by
serious opuntioid collectors. Slow-growing, slow-rooting, and worth every season
of careful cultivation.

The seedling offered is comparable to the one pictured — segment count, size,
and spination will vary slightly from plant to plant, but all are grown from the
same seed lot on our property.

Care Basics

Light: Bright light to full sun; some afternoon shade in extreme heat helps
preserve the chalky bloom on the stems
Water: Sparingly. Deep watering only when soil is completely dry; minimal water
in winter dormancy
Soil: Extremely fast-draining mineral-heavy mix; pumice or coarse grit blend
preferred
Hardiness: Hardy to roughly 20°F (-6°C) if kept bone dry; rot is the primary
risk, not cold
Habit: Compact stacked-sphere clumper; stays small and sculptural for years
Flowering: White to pale-pink blooms in summer on mature segments

Every plant we ship is hand-grown on our family nursery in Blythe, California —
